The Meisner Technique is one of the most sort-after by casting directors and industry professionals in the United States and throughout the world. The course is on-going and students progress according to their individual abilities regardless of their experience in the industry. The first ten weeks of the course will be focused on laying down the foundation, enabling actors to work from a much freer and instinctive place. It is designed to improve one’s ability no matter what background or experience they have had in the past.
Laying the foundation
In brief, during the first few lessons students will learn the founding
principals of the repetition exercise, which is the corner stone of the
Meisner Technique. The purpose of this exercise is to train actors to
instinctively act and react, enabling an improvisational exercise or a
scene to burst into life, sustaining a true human connection.
Acting is Doing
This level focuses on teaching the nuts and bolts of what it means and
how to live truthfully, in a given imaginary circumstance. The truth in
one’s acting is how real you are in the moment and students will be taught
what Sanford Meisner meant by the ‘reality of doing’. These exercises
are developed in an improvisational world based on one’s true desires,
wants and needs. As students develop an understanding of this work the
stakes are raised, allowing them to push and explore the boundaries of
their own emotional range.
Working with Text
Students will be given a scene to learn at the beginning of the term to
get them familiar with how to apply the Meisner Technique exercises to
script work. The focus of this exercise is to simplify what is needed
to make the scene work. Too many actors play the problem and the emotion
of the scene, thus disconnecting them from their working partner and what
the scene is really about. We will be teaching you to be free within the
text allowing you to live truthfully moment to moment.
At the end of the ten weeks students will be assessed and will then have the opportunity to enroll into both our Meisner and Camera courses.
