Meisner Technique

The Actor’s Pulse is an acting school located in Sydney specialising in The Meisner Technique, which is an organic step-by-step approach to acting.

The acting classes are based on genuine first-hand and up-to-date knowledge of Sanford Meisner's latest work and are designed to give beginning and intermediate acting students a solid base from which to work. The unique approach of our acting classes combines the techniques used for stage acting with the special considerations needed for film and television work. With a strong and basic foundation, an actor can confidently approach any material.

In brief, the acting classes begin with the first step in the Meisner Technique: Taking in the first moment. This is followed by Repetition: an exercise developed to compel an actor to use his instinct and, remain in a moment-to-moment relationship with his working partner.

From here we move on to the "Activities and Doors" exercise: where we begin to really focus on ‘Doing’ truthfully under any given imaginary circumstance. At an intermediate level, come the following exercises that build upon one another: Relationship, Preparation, Impediments, Particularization, and the unique Spoon River Exercises.

From this stage we advance into Scene Study: working within the writer's intention of each scene by breaking it down and applying story structure and script analysis techniques. The key to a solid film/stage scene or audition is to make the script work; determine what the material is, what is needed to tell the story and then make decisive choices to enable a truthful and compelling performance.

Given that this technique is of high intensity and demands a great amount of focus, actors are encouraged to bring a strong work ethic, passion and commitment to their work during classes and outside in rehearsals.
